Yet Another Zombie Survivors Beginner Squad Build

Lead SWAT, recruit Tank and Engineer, and develop Pistol / SMG before adding one useful skill per teammate. Choose an unlocked Assault Rifle or Sniper route; swap Engineer for Medic when attrition ends runs.

Start with SWAT as leader, recruit Tank, then Engineer for a beginner squad you can build with the starting roster. Push SWAT's firearm route before spreading levels across every ability. Use Tank and Engineer to add damage and space control, then address the specific reason your last run ended.

This is an editorial starting build, assembled from the Version 1.0 community synergy reference and player upgrade advice. The composition is a documented community option; the priorities below are our decision rules, not a site-tested damage ranking.

Squad and recruitment order

  • Leader — SWAT: build around the firearm you can keep upgrading. A single developed damage route is easier to evaluate than three half-built routes.
  • First rescue — Tank: add a second combat route; choose a visible tool such as Sawblade Drone before investing in several separate abilities.
  • Second rescue — Engineer: develop Electric Turret for another area of pressure. Add Energy Shield when being surrounded, rather than insufficient damage, is ending attempts.

The community synergy reference lists Tank–Engineer with SWAT as a Version 1.0 trio. A listed pairing becomes useful when you have its required nodes; selecting the characters alone does not unlock their whole skill trees.

Upgrade priorities you can follow

  1. Opening: take SWAT weapon upgrades toward a developed firearm. Player advice favors SWAT's weapon route early; use this as your baseline rather than levelling every offered ability.
  2. After a rescue: establish one useful teammate skill, then return to the primary damage route. If SOS offers are scarce, make the existing leader functional instead of waiting for a perfect trio.
  3. When movement space disappears: move a control or defensive choice ahead of another damage pick. Leave the edge before the horde closes your return route.
  4. When the squad survives but cannot clear: prioritize weapon damage and attack-speed options supporting the weapon you already developed.
  5. After the core works: buy the available synergy nodes that match your actual teammates and abilities. Rank II–V access varies with your progression; do not plan a locked node as opening power.

Equipment and pickup decisions

Choose weapon or relevant damage-type bonuses when clear speed is the bottleneck. Choose health, armor or recovery when chip damage repeatedly ends otherwise stable runs. Take movement when you cannot reach pickups and return safely. These are effect priorities, so they remain usable when a chest does not offer a named item.

Military Training can complement the main damage route. Compare its offered effect with the run's weakness rather than automatically taking the rarest card. For a mission run, keep the required item instead of replacing it just to follow a combat preference.

Alternatives and mode limits

If Medic is unlocked and accumulated damage is your main problem, try SWAT / Tank / Medic and build a recovery skill. This trades the Engineer slot for sustain; it is an editorial alternative rather than a guaranteed stronger trio. Keep the same map and difficulty when comparing it.

Use this starting route for learning Default and preparing an Endurance Infinite unlock attempt. In Boss Rush, the Final Boss arrives at ten minutes: finishing a useful damage route matters more than completing every optional branch. See the Boss Rush guide. For an Infinite record or a specific Torment, the objective needs a separate plan.

Improve the next attempt

Write down whether you died from gradual damage, lost movement space, or failed to kill an objective in time. Keep the leader and change one priority based on that result. Save the composition and mode in the Squad Builder so the next comparison starts from the same plan.

Pick the weapon branch before spending on gear

Use Pistol / SMG as the opening and develop an unlocked Assault Rifle or Sniper Rifle route. Assault Rifle is our baseline for sustained firearm pressure; Sniper is an alternative when you can maintain an open firing lane. Grenade Launcher is a separate Explosive plan, introduced as a Rank 3 option in the official 0.8 update. Keep damage-type support aligned with the branch you chose.

For Tank, start Shotgun or Sawblade Drone as the second source of pressure. For Engineer, use Taser / Tesla when you need another weapon route, or Electric Turret / EMP when SWAT already handles kills and space is the problem. These choices give each recruit a specific job before you add a third ability.

The official progression rework lets followers gain Specialization while present and through their upgrades. Keep Tank or Engineer in the squad to develop their permanent trees while SWAT leads; a locked synergy is a between-run purchase, not a reason to stop using the beginner trio.

Open this SWAT / Tank / Engineer preset, set your actual Ranks and save the current weapon goal. For a different objective, compare the three builds by mode.
