SWAT, Tank and Engineer are the starting choices. Huntress needs a single 15-minute run, Medic needs 100 collected Health Packs, and Ranger needs Survival Level 175. For Ghost, Pyro and Mechanic, build toward their cumulative combat counters instead of repeating story missions.
All Survivor unlock requirements
| Survivor | Unlock condition | What to do next |
|---|---|---|
| SWAT | Starting roster; no unlock grind Community record | Start Isolated City on Default and work toward a 15-minute run. |
| Tank | Starting roster; no unlock grind Community record | Start Isolated City on Default and work toward a 15-minute run. |
| Engineer | Starting roster; no unlock grind Community record | Use an Electric route to work toward Pyro. |
| Huntress | Survive 15 minutes in one run Community record | Use Isolated City Default; favor safe movement over risky pickups. |
| Ghost | Defeat 100 boss enemies across runs Community record | Defeat the larger enemies with health bars during regular runs; final arena bosses are not the only target. |
| Medic | Collect 100 Health Packs across runs Official requirement | Collect dropped hearts when injured. Healing upgrades are a different reward. |
| Pyro | Accumulate elemental damage; community record: 2,000,000 Community record | Lead Engineer, develop Electric damage and keep that route across runs. Compare the locked card with this older community threshold. |
| Mechanic | 4,000 ability activations: official base requirement Official requirement | Build several active abilities and Ability Cooldown support. Existing progress can reduce the number still needed. |
| Ranger | Reach Survival Level 175 Official requirement | Progress the general tree. A team level of 175 inside one run is a different counter. |
The table distinguishes official requirements from player-recorded conditions. Pyro is the field with an older community threshold: the linked report records 2,000,000 elemental damage across runs. Use its Electric farming route while matching the number on your locked card. The other numeric corrections below come directly from official patch notes.
Which Survivor should you work toward first?
- New save: aim for Huntress. Start Isolated City on Default with the SWAT / Tank / Engineer squad. Develop one main damage route and protect an escape lane until 15 minutes. This is one continuous run; several short runs do not replace it.
- While learning: progress Ghost and Medic together. Defeat boss enemies that your team can reach safely and collect hearts when injured. You gain both counters during ordinary attempts, so there is little reason to abandon a stable run just to begin a dedicated farm.
- For Pyro: switch the damage plan to Engineer. Develop Taser and its Electric upgrades, then add Electric Turret or another functioning Electric ability. Matching damage bonuses support that goal; a high total made from unrelated damage types is less useful. The Engineer guide explains the route.
- For Mechanic: switch from damage per hit to ability frequency. Establish several automatically activating abilities, then take Ability Cooldown support. Keep a weapon developed enough to survive while abilities cycle. A weapon-only run can clear enemies without advancing the ability counter efficiently.
- For Ranger: continue general progression. Survival Level 175 is separate from team level during a run and from a Survivor Rank. After unlocking her, start with the Ranger squad guide.
This order groups objectives that can advance together. If a locked card is already close to completion, finish that target before changing the entire squad.
Medic: 100 Health Packs, not 200
The official 0.2.2 hotfix explicitly fixes Medic to unlock at 100 collected Health Packs, correcting the older 200 requirement. That is why a 200-pack guide can send you on an unnecessary grind.
Collect the dropped heart pickups while missing health. Selecting a healing upgrade is a different reward. The original player guide also distinguishes hearts from healing power-ups. If a heart cannot be collected at full health, leave it for a safe return when injured; forcing contact with a dangerous enemy can cost the whole attempt.
Ghost: count boss enemies, not only final bosses
The community-recorded target is 100 boss enemies across runs. These are the larger, health-bar enemies encountered during combat, so you can make progress before reaching a map finale. Play the mode you can already survive, develop reliable damage, and defeat reachable targets without letting the surrounding horde close your exit.
Treat unlocked Endurance as an optional farming venue, not a prerequisite. If its pressure kills the squad quickly, a longer Default run gives you more time to engage targets and collect other progression rewards.
Mechanic: why old guides say 5,000
The official 0.9 announcement lowered the base requirement from 5,000 to 4,000 ability activations. Existing activations or earlier progression credit can leave fewer activations still needed; a remaining-progress display is not a new universal base requirement.
For a practical attempt, use Engineer with the teammates you own, fund several active abilities and add cooldown support. If Ghost is already unlocked, his ability routes are another option. Compare the counter before and after the run so you can tell whether a change actually increased activations. This measures unlock progress, rather than guessing from a damage total.
Ranger unlock, Rank and Seeding are separate goals
The official 1.0 release sets Ranger at Survival Level 175. Rank progression develops a character you own; Ranger's personal mission Seeding is a later mission objective. Neither replaces the level requirement.
If you own Ranger but Seeding is blocked, use the mission troubleshooting guide. Patch 1.0.1 allows that mission on any difficulty. For weapons or synergy nodes that remain locked after recruitment, follow that Survivor's permanent tree rather than repeating the character unlock route.
Sources and update scope
Sources reviewed October 19, 2026 against the official Steam news archive through 1.0.1b. Official notes establish Medic, Mechanic and Ranger; original Steam player records support the starting roster, Huntress, Ghost and the older Pyro target.
