Start Isolated City on Default with SWAT as leader, then recruit Tank and Engineer. Develop SWAT's Pistol / SMG route before spreading levels across several abilities. Your first concrete target is a 15-minute run for Huntress; after that, work toward clearing Default and opening the next arena.

Rescues and upgrades are offered during the run, so use these milestones instead of expecting a fixed minute-by-minute script. If your preferred follower has not appeared, keep developing the leader; the existing squad still has to clear your route. The beginner squad build covers weapon and ability choices in more detail.

What should you upgrade first?

For this SWAT opening, choose weapon development first, then one useful follower skill. Add defensive support earlier only when enemies are already closing the exits. A simple decision order is:

  1. Can the firearm clear a path? If not, take its next upgrade or matching weapon damage/cadence support.
  2. Can you stay in that open space? If not, add Tank or Engineer control and take movement when it solves the escape problem.
  3. Are small hits accumulating despite safe movement? Add recovery; once unlocked, Medic can replace Engineer in that version of the squad.
  4. Is the core working? Develop the second damage route or an unlocked synergy that uses a skill you actually selected.

SWAT's later choices include Assault Rifle and Sniper Rifle. Grenade Launcher is an extra Rank 3 branch added in the official 0.8 update. Use a branch you own now; the same firearm-first opening works before every final option is available.

How to collect XP, chests and hearts safely

Move toward the next open lane, not toward the nearest reward. Circle back for nearby XP after the squad has cleared space. Before taking a chest or SOS detour, identify the route you will use to leave it. If the horde closes that route, keep moving and approach from a safer side.

A dropped heart is useful when injured. Do not walk through a wall of enemies for a small heal. A damage item helps when you cannot kill; movement or protection helps when you cannot safely reach the rewards. This makes chest choices useful even when the exact item from a build is not offered.

Automatic targeting handles normal combat while you move. If a boss needs focused attention, official 0.9.0b added a temporary auto-aim override using the left mouse button or right stick. You can learn the normal movement loop first and use that override for a specific target.

What carries over after a failed run?

The 0.7 progression rework separates general growth from each Survivor's Specialization. Cash contributes to Survival progression. Survivors gain Specialization while present in the squad and through developing their weapons and abilities, so Tank and Engineer can progress while SWAT leads.

Spend toward the squad you are actually using. Weapon-focused SWAT and ability-focused Engineer need different bonuses; a Survivor-specific upgrade is not automatically shared by the whole team. The first useful permanent purchase is one that improves an active part of your plan or opens the next branch you will use.

Use Camp missions to choose the next objective

After a run, check the Mission Log in the Camp. It identifies the required map or mode and lets you retry incomplete missions. Mission rewards contribute to Team Bond, the shared Cash and Specialization bonus introduced in 1.0 and renamed from Friendship in the later hotfix.

Keep the mission and unlock goal together when they fit. A routine Isolated City attempt can also progress boss kills or Medic's hearts. When the objective asks for a different map or mode, switch deliberately instead of hoping another Default run will complete it. See all Survivor unlocks and missions and progression.

Change the next run based on how you lost

A failure gives you a specific next adjustment
What ended the runChange next time
The horde boxed you inTurn toward open space earlier; establish Engineer control before another optional damage branch.
Small hits drained the squadFavor recovery or protection; compare a Medic swap after unlocking her.
You survived but could not kill a tough targetFinish the main firearm and matching damage support before opening a new support skill.
The expected weapon or synergy never appearedCheck its permanent Rank gate; use an available branch and keep developing it.

Open the beginner squad in the planner, enter your actual Ranks and save the next attempt. Keep the arena fixed while changing the choice that caused the loss.
